9-9-23 Reflections on Scripture | Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, Priest

Gospel
Luke 6:1-5

While Jesus was going through a field of grain on a sabbath,
his disciples were picking the heads of grain,
rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.
Some Pharisees said,
"Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?"
Jesus said to them in reply,
"Have you not read what David did
when he and those who were with him were hungry?
How he went into the house of God, took the bread of offering,
which only the priests could lawfully eat,
ate of it, and shared it with his companions?"
Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."

Reflection

When Jesus tells the Pharisees that He is the Lord of the Sabbath He is making clear that the law which governs so many parts of the life of the Israelite people, the law is subservient to Him, to His desire, to His longing to heal and transform the world. The law doesn't change us, but God can.

Closing Prayer

Father, help us to balance regulations and rules of our religions so that we will never let them get in the way of the fullness of who you are in us. Give us authority to be exactly what you've asked us to be. And we ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
