9-26-24 Reflection on Scripture | Thursday of the 25th Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel
Luke 9:7-9

Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening,
and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying,
“John has been raised from the dead”;
others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”;
still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.”
But Herod said, “John I beheaded.
Who then is this about whom I hear such things?”
And he kept trying to see him.

Reflection

Herod would not be a person you might hold up as a model of how to live, but there is something about him. The thing that he reveals to us is that within every human being, no matter how far we may drift from the truth, there's something in us that’s always looking for it. Like a tiny light that wants to be turning into a great flame.

That's what we see in Herod. He longed to see that which is true.

Closing Prayer

Father, you have given us everything that we need. It's up to us to decide to make decisions that say we choose the light over darkness. We choose the truth over error. Bless us with that consistent longing and desire. Fan it, let it grow so that we’ll will be transformed and help transform one another. And we ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
