Reflections | PERSON OF FAITH

Msgr. Don Fischer reflects on the natural state a person of faith possesses, and what a gift they are to others.

Good morning. I'm going to talk to you about what it means to be a person of faith. What is it that would distinguish you from someone else? Think about not, you know, finding somebody in church or asking the question, “What is your faith?,” but like, what would it be that you might be around somebody to say, “You know what? That person, I really believe, has a deep faith in God.” So what is it about him? And I think the most obvious thing and yet it's subtle, so you have to kind of watch for it. It's that there is something that flows out of a person that believes that God is dwelling inside of them. It comes from their heart.

In fact, if you know anything about the heart, it can resonate a an electromagnetic field. And so if you imagine God dwells in your heart and out of that heart, comes this energy or this grace, I'll call it Grace. What does it feel like? I guarantee you, it's not religious in that sense. You know, I've been around a lot of people. They talk about scripture all the time and you say, “They're so religious.” But when you're a man or a woman of faith, there's a resonance that comes out of you that is by far the most healing thing. And I always say, and this is so simple, but it's love.

But there's something about love. That's unique, the love of God. And that is it is all compassion, understanding. It's the ability to see and believe that there is something in the world that is imperfect, that is sinful, maybe in you, maybe in me. But its reaction is never judgmental, it's never condemning, it is somehow embracing. Embracing is not saying it's okay it's saying, “You know what? That's not really what you are. That's not really who you are.” It's almost like it's a resonance that comes out of a person that is an absolute affirmation for you as you are.

You know what it's like to be around a person who is judgmental. If somebody is there judging a whole bunch of other people, you're wondering what they're thinking of me, but if you got somebody who just seemingly absorbs things and takes them in and they seem they take in the goodness that’s around them and they smile and they have this kind of presence that you just don't want to leave them, that's a man. That's a woman of faith. And when you have one in your life, when you are in life, life is beautiful.

Have a good day.
