Reflections on Scripture | Holy Thursday - Chrism Mass

Join Msgr. Don Fischer as he reads and delivers a short reflection on today’s gospel, followed by 3 1/2 minutes of contemplative music and a closing prayer. Msgr. Don hopes that today’s reflection on the gospel will empower you to carry the Word in your heart throughout the day.

Gospel
Luke 4:16-21

Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,
and went according to his custom
into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

            The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
                        because he has anointed me
                        to bring glad tidings to the poor.
            He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
                        and recovery of sight to the blind,
                        to let the oppressed go free,
            and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
           and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Reflection

In this reading, we have a sense of the depth of the commitment and the conviction Jesus had to who he was and what he was here to accomplish.

He was going to fulfill all the promises of the Old Testament. And one of those promises was that spirit would be given to us, a power of enlightenment, it would give us this the ability to to be healers and people that empowered other people and people who awaken to people. This is the promise of everyone who follows Jesus.

So reflect on this power that is yours. Be convinced, Be aware. You are a powerful agent of healing, empowerment, an awakening.

The Closing prayer

Father, it's so easy for us to get caught up in just simple, right and wrong. Doing things for you, doing things for others, and not realize what we're here to do is not so much something, but to become someone. Bless us with the conviction that we are like you, the Christ, anointed, to be a source of life for one another. Amen.
