Join Msgr. Don Fischer as he reads and delivers a short reflection on today’s gospel, followed by 3 1/2 minutes of contemplative music and a closing prayer. Msgr. Don hopes that today’s reflection on the gospel will empower you to carry the Word in your heart throughout the day.

Gospel
Luke 8:19-21

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him
but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside
and they wish to see you."
He said to them in reply, "My mother and my brothers
are those who hear the word of God and act on it."

Reflection

The core of the message of Jesus is relational. It's about having a relationship with God that is so close, so intimate that it overpowers any other relationship. And in this passage it is so simple to say that the people that interrupted Jesus' teaching were just saying, ‘These people are more important than those people that you're talking to.’ And Jesus made it clear, ‘No, what I've come to do is open hearts.

Open minds. That's my family. That's who I'm close to. That's who I live for.’

Closing Prayer

Father, you have revealed through Jesus the intimacy you long to have with us. Bless us with openness to it. Keep us from imagining that we have to earn this. It's a gift. It's a gift. That's what it always is, a gift. And we ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
