Reflections on Scripture | Wednesday of the 14th Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel
Matthew 10:1-7

Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples
and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out
and to cure every disease and every illness.
The names of the Twelve Apostles are these:
first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew;
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Philip and Bartholomew,
Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;
Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot
who betrayed Jesus.

Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus,
"Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.
Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As you go, make this proclamation: 'The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.'"

Reflection

It's easy to see in this passage the beginning of the church. 12 men were disciples. Now they become apostles and they're sent forth to proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven. And you see in Jesus a great concern for those who are most in need of the message that He longs to share with them. He asked them to go to the house of Israel.

His family, His people that had not been fed by the temple. 

Closing Prayer

Father, awaken in us a role that we have as apostles, teachers, those that open others to the truth of the gospel. We all proclaim the Kingdom of God, give us courage and give us the understanding we need to accomplish this task. And we ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
